What the Kenexa Excel test checks

Kenexa Prove It! tests are built to see whether you can do everyday office work in Excel without looking things up. The Excel tests come in several versions and levels, and the employer picks the one that fits the job. Some versions ask you to carry out tasks in a simulated Excel window; others ask what a formula or a feature does.

Whatever the version, the formula questions come back to the same skills: totals and averages, percentages, rounding, counting and adding up with conditions, IF, and looking values up in a table. Those are the skills this practice test drills.

How this practice test works

You have 30 minutes for 20 questions, from counting blanks and working out a growth rate to HLOOKUP, a commission table and a VLOOKUP whose column is found with MATCH. Each question has its own small sheet, written for this test only. Click the answer cell, type your formula and press Enter, as in Excel.

Nothing is marked until you hand in. Your answer has to be a formula that still gives the right result when the numbers change, so typing the answer as a number does not count. Afterwards you see your score, every question you missed and where to practice it.

How to prepare

Take the free preview of the first 10 questions to see where you stand. Practice the topics behind your misses in the lessons, then take the full test against the clock. If the employer has told you the level of the test, spend most of your time on that level: a basic test is mostly totals, percentages and simple IF formulas, while an advanced one leans on lookups and conditional sums.
