Excel tests for job applications

Indeed Excel assessment practice test

Employers who hire through Indeed often ask candidates to take an Excel skills assessment before the interview. This mock test gives you 20 real spreadsheet tasks against the clock: you type each formula into a live grid, and every answer is checked the way Excel would calculate it. Pass 14 of the 20 and you are ready for the real thing.

What the Indeed Excel assessment checks

Indeed's skills tests are short, timed and practical. For Excel they look at whether you can work with a spreadsheet without help: add up and average a column, count what matches a condition, round a result, make a decision with IF and pull a value out of a table with a lookup.

You are not asked to recite definitions. You are given a small table and a question, and you are expected to find the answer with the right formula, quickly.

How this practice test works

You get 30 minutes for 20 questions, in the order the topics usually build up: SUM and AVERAGE first, then COUNT, MAX and MIN, ROUND and simple percentage formulas, IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF and AVERAGEIF, and finally VLOOKUP, IFERROR and XLOOKUP. Each question has its own small sheet, written for this test only, so you cannot have practiced the exact task before. Click the answer cell, type your formula and press Enter, exactly as you would in Excel.

You can skip a question and come back to it. Nothing is marked until you hand in, so you get the same pressure as the real test. When you finish, or when the time runs out, you see your score, which questions you got wrong and where to practice each one.

How to prepare in a week

Take the test once cold to see where you stand. Then work through the lessons for every question you missed; they have hints that point at the usual mistakes, such as a missing FALSE at the end of VLOOKUP or a criterion without quotes. Take the test again two or three days later. Most people who pass the mock test with 80% or more are comfortable on the day.

PracticeExcel is not affiliated with Indeed, and this is not Indeed's own test. The questions are written by us to practice the same skills, so a good score here means you know the formulas, not that you have seen the exact questions.
