Excel exercises for school

Students write the formulas themselves in a spreadsheet in the browser and find out right away whether they are right, and what is wrong if they aren't. Students can start without an account.

Here are the exercises sorted by subject. Each topic starts with a free exercise and gets harder as it goes.

Math

Formulas, percentages, averages, rounding, and MIN and MAX, for spreadsheet work in middle school and high school math.

Social studies

Percentages, percent change, averages and counting with COUNTIF, for working with real statistics.

Business and finance

Sales tax, margins, budgets, conditional sums and lookups, the way they are used at work.

How to use the exercises in class

Give students the link to a topic and let them work at their own pace. Each exercise takes a few minutes, and the spreadsheet checks the answer, so you don't grade by hand. If a student gets stuck, the spreadsheet can give a hint, and afterward the student can see the solution.

The exercises run in the browser on computers and Chromebooks, and students don't need to install Excel. What they learn works afterward in Excel and in Google Sheets.

Why write the formulas yourself?

When students watch a video and copy a formula, they get a right answer today and no understanding tomorrow. When they have to write the formula and are told what is wrong, they learn why it works. That is what lets them use it next time on a new problem.
