# **Excel functions**

Each function page shows the syntax in plain words, worked examples in a real grid and the lessons where you can practice it. Start with SUM and IF, then move on to SUMIF, XLOOKUP and the rest.

## **How each function page works**

Every page starts with what the function does in a sentence or two, then its syntax with each argument explained in plain English. Optional arguments are marked, so you can see at a glance what you must type and what Excel fills in for you. Below that are worked examples on a small sheet of realistic data: the formula, the cells it reads and the result it returns.

The examples aren't screenshots. Each one is calculated by the same formula engine that grades the exercises, and every result is checked against a real spreadsheet program before it is published, so what you see is what Excel gives you. Where a function has a well-known trap, such as the last argument of VLOOKUP or the order of the arguments in SUMIFS, the page points it out.

## **How the list is organized**

The functions are grouped by what you use them for: math for adding and rounding, logic for decisions, lookup for finding values in a table, text for cleaning up and splitting text, dates and times for days, months and hours, statistics for averages and spread, dynamic arrays for formulas that return several values at once, information for checking what a cell holds, and financial for loans and savings. Within each group they are listed alphabetically.

## **Which functions to learn first**

If you are new to formulas, start with SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN and MAX. They take a range and return one number, and almost every other function builds on that pattern. Then learn IF, because it lets a formula make a decision, and ROUND, because amounts and percentages rarely come out even.

Next come the functions employers test most: SUMIF and COUNTIF, their multi-condition versions SUMIFS and COUNTIFS, and a lookup. Learn VLOOKUP because you will meet it in other people's workbooks, then XLOOKUP or INDEX and MATCH for your own. With those, plus IFERROR to catch the errors, you can handle most of what an office job or an Excel test asks of you.

## **Function names in other languages**

Excel translates function names into the language it is installed in. In Danish Excel, SUMIF is SUM.HVIS and VLOOKUP is LOPSLAG, and the arguments are separated by semicolons instead of commas. You don't have to do anything about it: when you open a workbook made in another language, Excel shows the formulas in your own. If a formula copied from a forum gives #NAME?, check whether it was written for another language version.

[**All function names in Danish and English → **](https://practiceexcelonline.com/functions/english-danish)

## **Excel and Google Sheets**

Most functions work the same way in both programs. Every function that also works in Google Sheets has a Google Sheets version of its page, with a note on anything that works differently there, and the functions that exist only in Sheets, such as QUERY and ARRAYFORMULA, are listed on the Google Sheets page. Newer functions such as XLOOKUP, FILTER and SORT need Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365; older versions show #NAME? instead.

## **When a formula returns an error**

An error tells you what went wrong once you know how to read it. #N/A means a lookup didn't find what it was looking for. #VALUE! means an argument has the wrong type, often text where a number should be. #DIV/0! is a division by zero or by an empty cell. #NAME? means Excel doesn't recognize a name, usually a misspelled function or text without quotes. #REF! means the formula points at cells that have been deleted. The pages for IFERROR and IFNA show how to catch an error you expect.

## **Reading isn't the same as writing**

You learn a function by typing it, not by reading about it. Where a lesson covers the function, the page links to it, and there you write the formula yourself in a live grid, checked the moment you press Enter, with a hint when something is off. If you are preparing for a job, the timed practice tests mix these functions the way employer tests do.
