# **The CONCATENATE function**

Joins up to 255 texts into one. In Excel it takes single cells, not ranges; CONCAT and the & operator do the same job in new sheets.

=

CONCATENATE(

## **Syntax**

```
CONCATENATE(text1, [text2], ...)
```

<dl><dt>**text1 **</dt>
<dd>The first text, number or cell.</dd>
<dt>**text2, ... **(optional)</dt>
<dd>More texts, numbers or cells, joined in order with nothing between them.</dd></dl>

## **Examples**

D1`=CONCATENATE(1A2,2" ",3B2)`

|  | A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | First | Last |  | **Ann Berg** |
| 2 | Ann | Berg |  | |

**In plain words:** Join 1the first name in A2, 2a space and 3the last name in B2.

D1=CONCATENATE(B2,", ",A2)

|  | A | B | C | D |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | First | Last |  | **Berg, Ann** |
| 2 | Ann | Berg |  | |

B1=CONCATENATE("Total: ",TEXT(1234.5,"#,##0.00"))

|  | A | B |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 |  | **Total: 1,234.50** |

## **Questions**

<details>

<summary>

### What is the difference between CONCATENATE and CONCAT?

</summary>

CONCAT, from Excel 2019 on, also accepts ranges, so =CONCAT(A2:C2) joins three cells at once. CONCATENATE needs every cell listed and stays in Excel so older workbooks keep working.

</details>

<details>

<summary>

### How do I add a space between the joined texts?

</summary>

Give the space as its own argument, as in =CONCATENATE(A2," ",B2). To put the same separator between many cells, TEXTJOIN is shorter.

</details>
